I'm taking an Excel class in San Francisco today; 180 Montgomery to be exact. I worked in SF for many years and became somewhat of an "expert" at navigating my way through and around the foot traffic. It's been almost two years since I've been here with any regularity, and I must admit that I feel a bit like the little country boy in the Big City.
It takes a little getting used to the people and the traffic again. On a nostalgia trip to Harrington's, I was not sure if I should walk down Bush St. to Battery or keep going down Montgomery to California. In the end I ended up criss-crossing,, walking across the middle of one-way streets when traffic was clear, re-recognizing many familiar landmarks.
Harrington's was all the same faces: Nellie and Val were still floating around the floor, a couple of waitressing ghosts from San Francisco's Past. Everything was the same except, unfortunately, the prices. But the veggie burger w/Swiss and grilled mushrooms was as good as ever.
In many ways I miss the city, but at this point in life I'm enjoying the closeness and comfort of home that my present job provides.
But gee whiz, it sure is nice to visit though.
